That's how it is · that's the way it goes — a rule of life, or how things should be done. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 9: 장학금과 증명서 (Scholarships and certificates — a scholarship notice, seven documents, a certificate kiosk, one missing paper and a call to Daejeon).
What it means
A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 법이다 says that something is true for everyone: 처음에는 누구나 서툰 법이에요 'everyone is clumsy at first'. It also says how something should be done: 서류는 미리 준비하는 법이에요 'documents are prepared in advance'. Verbs and 있다/없다 take -는 법이다; adjectives take -(으)ㄴ 법이다: 준비하는 법 · 서툰 법. -는 법이 없다 means 'never does': 그 선생님은 화를 내는 법이 없어요.
Forms

|---|---|---|
| V-는 법이다 | 동사 · 있다/없다 | 준비하다 → 미리 준비하는 법이에요 |
| A-(으)ㄴ 법이다 | 형용사 (ㄹ 탈락) | 서툴다 → 처음에는 서툰 법이에요 |
