A/V-다고 해도 과언이 아니다 — it is no exaggeration to say — a strong claim you can stand behind
It is no exaggeration to say — a strong claim you can stand behind. Korean grammar for high advanced learners — Level 6A, lesson 1: 서울 돌아보기 (Touring Seoul — city landmarks, a magazine article, news and speeches).
What it means
A/V-다고 해도 과언이 아니다 means 'it is no exaggeration to say …': you make a very strong claim and show that you stand behind it — 동네 전체가 카페라고 해도 과언이 아니에요 'it's no exaggeration to say the whole neighbourhood is one big café'. The claim is a quotation: verbs take -ㄴ/는다고 (몰린다고), adjectives -다고 (독특하다고), nouns (이)라고 (카페라고), and a past claim -았/었다고 (바꿨다고). It sounds best when a fact or a reason comes first: 골목마다 카페가 있어서 …. Writers end it with 과언이 아니다, speakers with 과언이 아니에요, and presenters with 과언이 아닙니다.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V-ㄴ/는다고 해도 과언이 아니다 | 동사 · 받침 X -ㄴ다고 · 받침 O -는다고 | 몰리다 → 몰린다고 해도 과언이 아니다 |
| A-다고 · N(이)라고 해도 과언이 아니다 | 형용사 -다고 · 명사 (이)라고 · 지난 일 -았/었다고 | 독특하다 → 독특하다고 해도 과언이 아니다 |
