캠퍼스 첫 학기 — First semester on campus — orientation, clubs, seniors and juniors, cafeteria life, and turning down a drink
캠퍼스 첫 학기 — First semester on campus — orientation, clubs, seniors and juniors, cafeteria life, and turning down a drink. Lesson 1 of Level 5B in the haru Korean regular course.
What you will be able to do
- Add a second, stronger point in the same direction with A/V-(으)ㄹ뿐더러: 동아리에 들면 친구가 생길뿐더러 선배들의 도움도 받을 수 있어요.
- Explain what you did because someone suggested it, with V-자기에: 친구가 동아리 박람회에 가 보자기에 따라갔어요.
- Pass on what you saw and found out yourself — in order, and quoting what people said — with A/V-더라고(요), and more softly with A/V-데(요): 선배들이 밥을 사 주더라고요. · 학식이 생각보다 맛있데요.
- Read a one-page campus guide from the international office, follow three first-semester stories and a club after-party, decline a drink softly and then clearly, tell how universities differ in your country, and write a short club application — with six Sino-Korean idioms about learning.
Grammar in this lesson
- A/V-(으)ㄹ뿐더러 — not only … but also — adding a second, stronger point in the same direction (close to -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 · -거니와 from Lesson 4B-8)
- V-자기에 — since someone suggested 'let's …' — explaining what you did because of a suggestion (-자고 하기에, shortened)
- A/V-더라고(요) — I saw that … · it turned out … — passing on what you found out yourself, now in a story told in order, quoting what people said (그러더라고요) and with -았/었더라고요 · Lesson 4B-3, deeper
- A/V-데(요) — I noticed … · it was …, I found — passing on something you experienced yourself, shorter and softer than -더라고요 (and not -대요, which is hearsay)
