I saw that … · it turned out … — passing on what you found out yourself, now in a story told in order, quoting what people said (그러더라고요) and with -았/었더라고요 · Lesson 4B-3, deeper. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 1: 캠퍼스 첫 학기 (First semester on campus — orientation, clubs, seniors and juniors, cafeteria life, and turning down a drink).
What it means
A/V-더라고(요) passes on what you saw and found out yourself — Lesson 4B-3: 선배들이 잘 챙겨 주더라고요. In a story told in order it comes at the end of each step: What someone said is reported with -았/었더라고요 means it was already done when you looked: 자리가 다 찼더라고요. It is not used for your own deliberate action.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
Key points
- A/V-더라고(요) = I saw that … — now in a story told in order; 그러더라고요 reports what someone said; -았/었더라고요 = already done when you looked.
- The subject is what you observed, not your own action Lesson 4B-3 block, deeper. For hearsay about the future use -대요.
Examples
