V-자기에 — since someone suggested 'let's …' — explaining what you did because of a suggestion (-자고 하기에, shortened)

Since someone suggested 'let's …' — explaining what you did because of a suggestion (-자고 하기에, shortened). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 1: 캠퍼스 첫 학기 (First semester on campus — orientation, clubs, seniors and juniors, cafeteria life, and turning down a drink).

What it means

V-자기에 says that someone suggested 'let's …' and that is why you did what you did: 친구가 가 보자기에 따라갔어요 'a friend suggested we go and look, so I went along'. It is -자고 하기에 said short; the second half is what you did, usually in the past. The other quotes take the same shape — -다기에 (said that), -(으)냐기에 (asked), -(으)라기에 (told me to): 선배가 밥을 사 주겠다기에 나갔어요. For an older person keep the honorific: 선배가 같이 먹자고 하시기에.
