N(으)로 — how you go and which way — by subway, to the left, through exit 2
How you go and which way — by subway, to the left, through exit 2. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 11: 서울역까지 어떻게 가요? (How do I get to Seoul Station? — transport and directions).
What it means
(으)로 after a noun does two jobs. It says how you travel: 지하철로 가요, 'I go by subway'; 버스로 와요, 'I come by bus'. It also says which way you go: 왼쪽으로 가세요, 'go left'; 2번 출구로 나오세요, 'come out through exit 2'. After a consonant add 으로: 2호선으로, 왼쪽으로. After a vowel add 로: 버스로, 택시로. A noun that ends in ㄹ adds only 로, as if it ended in a vowel: 지하철로. With 갈아타다, (으)로 marks the line you change to: 1호선으로 갈아타요. To say you walk, use 걸어서 가요 — there is no vehicle, so there is no (으)로.
