V-기(가) A — it's good · easy · hard to … — how an action feels

It's good · easy · hard to … — how an action feels. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 4: 주변이 조용해서 살기 좋아요 (It's a good place to live — finding a room).

What it means

V-기 turns a verb into 'doing it': 살기 'living', 쓰기 'using', 걷기 'walking'. Put an adjective after it and you say how that action is: 살기 좋아요 'it's a good place to live', 쓰기 편해요 'it's easy to use', 찾기 어려워요 'it's hard to find', 배우기 쉬워요 'it's easy to learn'. Take 다 off and add 기 — 받침 does not matter, and ㄹ, ㅂ and ㄷ verbs do not change (살기, 줍기, 걷기). The usual adjectives are 좋다, 편하다, 쉽다, 어렵다 and 힘들다. In speech 가 is often dropped: 살기(가) 좋아요. The reason often comes first with -아서/어서 (Level 1B): 주변이 조용해서 살기 좋아요. The tense goes on the adjective at the end: 계단이 많아서 다니기 힘들었어요. You have already met -기 in the names of skills — 듣기, 읽기 — and you will see it on signs and in adverts: 역에서 걷기 5분 'a five-minute walk from the station'.
