V-(으)ㄹ 것 — do … · don't … — instructions on notices and rules (written only)

Do … · don't … — instructions on notices and rules (written only). Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 4: 주변이 조용해서 살기 좋아요 (It's a good place to live — finding a room).

What it means

On notices, rules, exam papers and to-do memos, Korean often ends an instruction with -(으)ㄹ 것: 'do …'. It is short and neutral — no 요, no 습니다 — so you read it and write it, but you do not say it to people. After a 받침 add 을 것 (벗을 것, 닫을 것); after a vowel add ㄹ 것 (가져갈 것, 버릴 것). ㄹ verbs keep one ㄹ (열다 → 열 것), ㅂ verbs change ㅂ to 우 (줍다 → 주울 것) and ㄷ verbs change ㄷ to ㄹ (듣다 → 들을 것). For 'don't', use -지 말 것, the written partner of -지 마세요 (Level 1B): 건물 안에서 담배를 피우지 말 것. -았/었- is not used — a rule is about what to do from now on. When you tell someone a rule, turn it into speech: 조용히 할 것 → 조용히 하세요 or 조용히 해야 돼요; 두지 말 것 → 두지 마세요.
