V-아/어도 되다 — may I …? · it's all right to … — asking for and giving permission
May I …? · it's all right to … — asking for and giving permission. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 5: 여기서 사진을 찍어도 돼요? (May I take a photo here? — permission and experience).
What it means
-아/어도 되다 means 'it is all right to …, you may …'. Take the -아요/어요 form, drop 요 and add 도 되다: 앉아요 → 앉아도 돼요, 먹어요 → 먹어도 돼요, 해요 → 해도 돼요. So the vowel rule is the one you already know: ㅏ or ㅗ → 아도 (앉아도, 가도, 봐도), everything else → 어도 (먹어도, 마셔도, 써도), and 하다 → 해도. Irregular verbs change as usual: 듣다 → 들어도, 돕다 → 도와도, 부르다 → 불러도. To ask for permission, say it as a question: 여기서 사진을 찍어도 돼요? To give permission: 네, 찍어도 돼요. To say no, today you can use -지 마세요 (Level 1B): 아니요, 찍지 마세요 — the next grammar point gives you the usual answer. With 안 in front it means 'you don't have to': 신발을 안 벗어도 돼요. -아/어도 괜찮아요 means the same as -아/어도 돼요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -아도 돼요 | ㅏ · ㅗ | 앉다 + 아도 돼요 → 앉아도 돼요 |
| -어도 돼요 | 그 외 (ㅏ · ㅗ 아님) | 먹다 + 어도 돼요 → 먹어도 돼요 |
| 해도 돼요 | 하다 | 질문하다 → 질문해도 돼요 |
