A/V-기 때문에 · N 때문에 — because … — a clear reason
Because … — a clear reason. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 4: 주변이 조용해서 살기 좋아요 (It's a good place to live — finding a room).
What it means
-기 때문에 gives the reason for what follows: 'because'. Take 다 off and add 기 때문에 — 받침 does not matter: 가깝기 때문에, 조용하기 때문에, 없기 때문에, 멀기 때문에. Unlike -아서/어서, it can carry the past: 세탁기가 고장 났기 때문에 빨래를 못 했어요. To answer 왜요?, end the sentence with 기 때문이에요: 하숙집이 멀기 때문이에요. With a noun you already know N 때문에 (Lesson 2A-8): 시험 때문에 바빠요 'busy because of the exam'. When the reason is 'it is N', say N이기 때문에: 방학이기 때문에 기숙사가 조용해요. -기 때문에 sounds clear and a little formal, so you meet it in the news, on notices and in explanations. Like -아서/어서, it is not followed by 'please' or 'let's' — say 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요 with -(으)니까. For thanks and apologies keep -아서/어서: 늦어서 죄송합니다.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -기 때문에 | 형용사 · 동사 — 받침 O · X 모두 | 가깝다 + 기 때문에 → 가깝기 때문에 |
| -았/었기 때문에 | 과거 — 이미 일어난 일 | 고장 나다 → 고장 났기 때문에 |
| N 때문에 · N이기 때문에 | 명사 — N 때문에(2A 8과) · N이다 → N이기 때문에 | 시험 + 때문에 → 시험 때문에 |
