A/V-기는 하지만 — it's true that …, but … — admitting one point, then the other side

It's true that …, but … — admitting one point, then the other side. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 4: 주변이 조용해서 살기 좋아요 (It's a good place to live — finding a room).

What it means

-기는 하지만 means 'it's true that …, but …'. You first admit a point — often the very word the other person used — and then give the other side, which is what you really want to say: 그 방 좋아요? — 좋기는 하지만 좀 시끄러워요 'It is nice, but it's a bit noisy.' Take 다 off and add 기는 하지만; 받침 does not matter: 비싸기는 하지만, 멀기는 하지만, 가깝기는 하지만, 있기는 하지만. Compare -지만 (Level 1A): 비싸지만 깨끗해요 simply sets two facts side by side; 비싸기는 하지만 깨끗해요 agrees that it is expensive and puts the weight on 'clean'. That makes it a soft, polite way to disagree or to give a balanced opinion. For the past, put -았/었- on 하다: 집을 보기는 했지만 아직 계약하지 않았어요 (-았/었기는 하지만 is possible too). In speech 기는 often shortens to 긴: 비싸긴 하지만.
