N 대신 · V-는 대신(에) — instead of … · in return — swapping one thing or one job for another

Instead of … · in return — swapping one thing or one job for another. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 6: 설날에는 떡국을 먹어요 (On New Year's Day we eat rice-cake soup — holidays and housework).

What it means

대신 means 'instead of'. After a noun just add 대신 — there is no 받침 rule: 밥 대신 떡국 (tteokguk instead of rice), 커피 대신 차, 할머니 대신 아빠가 요리해요 (Dad cooks instead of Grandma). After a verb use the present modifier -는 (Lesson 2A-2) + 대신: 택시를 타는 대신 걸어가요 (I walk instead of taking a taxi). ㄹ verbs drop the ㄹ: 만들다 → 만드는 대신, 살다 → 사는 대신. 대신에 and 대신 mean the same. V-는 대신 also means 'in return': 제가 요리하는 대신 민수 씨가 설거지를 해 주세요 (I'll cook, and in return you wash up). The tense goes on the last verb: 작년에는 밥 대신 떡국을 먹었어요. With adjectives it is -(으)ㄴ 대신, 'but on the other hand': 이 방은 작은 대신 싸요.
