V-아/어 놓다 — do … in advance and leave it ready · leave something that way
Do … in advance and leave it ready · leave something that way. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 6: 설날에는 떡국을 먹어요 (On New Year's Day we eat rice-cake soup — holidays and housework).
What it means
-아/어 놓다 means doing something ahead of time so that it is ready, or doing something and leaving it that way. Take the -아요/어요 form, drop 요 and add 놓다: 사요 → 사 놓다, 만들어요 → 만들어 놓다, 예매해요 → 예매해 놓다. So the vowel rule is the one you already know: ㅏ or ㅗ → 아 놓다 (사 놓다, 닫아 놓다, 장을 봐 놓다), everything else → 어 놓다 (만들어 놓다, 씻어 놓다, 부쳐 놓다), and 하다 → 해 놓다. Irregular verbs change as usual: 듣다 → 들어 놓다, 돕다 → 도와 놓다. The tense and the ending go on 놓다: 사 놓았어요 (I've bought it — it's ready), 사 놓을게요 (I'll buy it in advance), 사 놓으세요 (buy it beforehand). It often comes with 미리 (in advance): 기차표를 미리 예매해 놓았어요. It can also mean leaving something in a state: 창문을 열어 놓으세요 (open it and leave it open). In speech 놓아요 often becomes 놔요 and 놓았어요 becomes 놨어요. 놓다 on its own simply means 'to put': 상에 떡국을 놓아요.
