V-(으)ㄹ까 하다 — I'm thinking of … — plans that are not fixed yet

I'm thinking of … — plans that are not fixed yet. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 6: 설날에는 떡국을 먹어요 (On New Year's Day we eat rice-cake soup — holidays and housework).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ까 하다 means 'I'm thinking of …', for a plan that is not fixed yet. It is the -(으)ㄹ까 of -(으)ㄹ까요? plus 하다, as if you were asking yourself 'shall I …?'. After a 받침 add 을까 해요 (먹을까 해요, 입을까 해요); after a vowel or ㄹ add ㄹ까 해요 (갈까 해요, 쉴까 해요; ㄹ verbs keep their ㄹ: 만들까 해요). ㄷ, ㅂ and ㅅ verbs change before 으: 듣다 → 들을까 해요, 돕다 → 도울까 해요. It is about your own plans, so the subject is usually 저 or 우리. It is less sure than -(으)려고 해요 (Lesson 2A-1), and -기로 했어요 (Lesson 2B-2) means the plan is decided. With -는데 (Lesson 2A-9) it opens a gentle invitation: 영화를 볼까 하는데 같이 갈까요? For a plan you had in the past, put the tense on 하다: 여행을 갈까 했어요. 그런데 집에서 쉬었어요.
