N에게서 · N한테서 (+ N께) — from someone — who you got it from, heard it from or learned it from

From someone — who you got it from, heard it from or learned it from. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 7: 부모님한테서 연락이 왔어요 (I heard from my parents — news from home).

What it means

에게서 and 한테서 mean 'from' a person: who something comes from, who you get it from, who you hear it from or learn it from. They go straight after the person, with or without 받침: 엄마한테서, 친구에게서. 한테서 is for everyday talk; 에게서 is for writing and formal speech — the same pair as 한테 and 에게 'to' (Level 1B). Compare: 유나 씨한테 편지를 보냈어요 'I sent Yuna a letter' and 유나 씨한테서 편지를 받았어요 'I got a letter from Yuna'. The usual verbs are 받다, 오다 (전화가 오다, 연락이 오다), 듣다, 배우다 and 빌리다. For someone you respect, use 께, the polite word you already know: 할머니께 용돈을 받았어요, 선생님께 배웠어요. For a place, a school or a company, use 에서: 학교에서 연락이 왔어요. In speech, 서 often drops after 받다, 듣다 and 배우다: 친구한테 들었어요 = 친구한테서 들었어요.
