A/V-(으)ㄹ 테니까 — I'll … so (you) … · it will probably … so … — sharing the jobs and giving advice

I'll … so (you) … · it will probably … so … — sharing the jobs and giving advice. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 6: 설날에는 떡국을 먹어요 (On New Year's Day we eat rice-cake soup — holidays and housework).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 테니까 joins two sentences. The first half is what I will do, or what I think will (probably) happen; the second half is a request, an offer or a suggestion that follows from it. After a 받침 add 을 테니까 (먹을 테니까, 찾을 테니까); after a vowel or ㄹ add ㄹ 테니까 (할 테니까, 부칠 테니까; ㄹ verbs keep their ㄹ: 만들 테니까). ㄷ, ㅂ and ㅅ words change before 으: 듣다 → 들을 테니까, 춥다 → 추울 테니까, 낫다 → 나을 테니까. With 제가 it is a promise: 제가 설거지를 할 테니까 좀 쉬세요 (I'll do the washing-up, so you have a rest). With anyone or anything else it is a guess: 길이 막힐 테니까 일찍 출발하세요 (the roads will probably be jammed, so leave early). Compare -(으)니까 (Lesson 2A-5): 길이 막히니까 … means you know it is jammed; 길이 막힐 테니까 … is your guess. For a guess about the past, add -았/었-: 어제 많이 바빴을 테니까 오늘은 푹 쉬세요. The second half is not a plain statement about yourself — it asks, offers or suggests.
