V-고 보니(까) —기사를 읽고 보니 내용이 달랐어요 — once I'd done it, I saw … — what you only realise afterwards
Once I'd done it, I saw … — what you only realise afterwards. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 10: 오늘 뉴스, 무슨 이야기예요? (What's in the news today? — comparing two sides).
What it means
V-고 보니(까) says that only once you had finished doing something did you see or realise something — often something you didn't expect: 지하철을 타고 보니 반대쪽으로 가는 지하철이었어요 'I got on the train, and only then did I see it was going the other way'. Add 고 보니 or 고 보니까 to any verb stem, with or without a 받침: 읽고 보니, 타고 보니, 만나고 보니 (듣다 stays 듣고, because nothing changes before 고). -았/었- never goes in front of it; the past goes at the end of the sentence: 읽고 보니 내용이 달랐어요. Two forms are so common that they are almost set phrases: 알고 보니 'as it turned out' — 처음에는 무서운 분인 줄 알았는데 알고 보니 아주 친절한 분이었어요 — and 듣고 보니 'now that I've heard it', used when an explanation changes your mind: 듣고 보니 그 말이 맞네요. Compare -아/어 보니까 (Lesson 3A-4), where you try something on purpose in order to find out (먹어 보니까 맛있어요), and -았/었더니 (Lesson 3B-3), which links what you did to the result it caused (많이 먹었더니 배가 아파요). With -고 보니, the action is simply done — and then the truth appears.
