뉴스 글말 —A/V-다고 합니다 · -(으)ㄴ/는 것으로 나타났다 — the language of the news — 'it is reported that …' · 'a survey found that …'

The language of the news — 'it is reported that …' · 'a survey found that …'. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 10: 오늘 뉴스, 무슨 이야기예요? (What's in the news today? — comparing two sides).

What it means

News reports are full of information that comes from someone else — the weather service, a shop owner, a survey — and Korean marks it. -다고 합니다 is Lesson 3A-1's -다고 하다 in the formal 합니다 style: 'it is reported · they say that …'. Adjectives take -다고 (춥다고 합니다), verbs -ㄴ다고 after a vowel and -는다고 after a 받침 (온다고 · 먹는다고 합니다), nouns (이)라고 (무료라고 합니다), and the past -았/었다고 (눈이 많이 왔다고 합니다). In a newspaper the same line ends in 글말 -다 (Lesson 2B-7): 온다고 한다. When the source is a survey or research, the news uses -(으)ㄴ/는 것으로 나타났다 'it was found that …': adjectives -(으)ㄴ (많은 것으로), verbs -는 (먹지 않는 것으로), something that has already happened V-(으)ㄴ (증가한 것으로), nouns 인 (다수인 것으로). It usually comes after 조사 결과 'the survey found'. These forms sound formal, so in a chat you shorten them: 아침을 안 먹는 학생이 많대요. Today you also learn to put two sides of a story together — with -지만 and -기는 하지만, and with 한편 'meanwhile' and 반대로 'on the contrary' at the start of the next sentence.
