A/V-(으)ㄹ걸(요) —월세가 조금 오를걸요 — I bet … · probably … — a casual guess you feel fairly sure of

I bet … · probably … — a casual guess you feel fairly sure of. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 11: 계약서는 꼼꼼히 읽어야 해요 (Read the contract carefully — paperwork and formal language).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ걸요 makes a guess you feel fairly sure about, in a relaxed, conversational way: 월세가 조금 오를걸요 'I bet the rent will go up a bit'. After a 받침 add 을걸요 (많을걸요, 있을걸요); after a vowel add ㄹ걸요 (오를걸요, 비쌀걸요); a stem that already ends in ㄹ keeps just one ㄹ (알다 → 알걸요), and irregular stems change as they do before 으 (어렵다 → 어려울걸요, 듣다 → 들을걸요). For something that has probably happened already, put -았/었- in front: 벌써 보냈을걸요 'they've probably sent it already'. With a noun use 일걸요 — 아마 학생일걸요 — and the negative is 아닐걸요. The voice usually rises at the end, and the ending often gently corrects what someone has just said: 오늘이 아닐걸요? 내일일걸요. Between close friends drop 요: 오를걸. Don't mix it up with -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 (Lesson 3A-5), a regret with a falling voice: 살걸 그랬어요 'I should have bought it'. Because it sounds casual and a little bold, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or -(으)실 거예요 with teachers and bosses.
