V-(으)시기 바랍니다 · -기 바라다 —번호표를 뽑고 기다리시기 바랍니다 — please … (notices and announcements) · I hope … — the polite ending of public notices

Please … (notices and announcements) · I hope … — the polite ending of public notices. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 11: 계약서는 꼼꼼히 읽어야 해요 (Read the contract carefully — paperwork and formal language).

What it means

V-(으)시기 바랍니다 is the polite ending of notices, announcements and formal letters: 번호표를 뽑고 기다리시기 바랍니다 'please take a number and wait'. Literally it says 'we hope that you (respected) will …': -(으)시- is the honorific, -기 turns the action into a noun, and 바랍니다 means 'we hope'. After a 받침 use 으시기 바랍니다 (읽으시기, 앉으시기); after a vowel use 시기 바랍니다 (기다리시기, 오시기); a ㄹ stem drops its ㄹ before 시 (만들다 → 만드시기). For a request that is also a favour, use -아/어 주시기 바랍니다 (조용히 해 주시기 바랍니다); to forbid something, -지 마시기 바랍니다 (들어가지 마시기 바랍니다). It is a little softer than -(으)십시오 (Lesson 1B-8), and you hear it in stations, offices and recorded phone messages — but face to face -(으)세요 or -아/어 주세요 is enough. Without 시, -기(를) 바라다 simply means 'I hope …': 좋은 결과가 있기를 바랍니다, 모두 건강하기를 바랍니다 — a formal wish at the end of a letter, a card or a speech. Both look ahead, so -았/었- does not go before them.
