V-아/어 가다 —계약이 거의 끝나 가요 — going on … · getting … · almost … — a change that keeps moving on from now

Going on … · getting … · almost … — a change that keeps moving on from now. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 11: 계약서는 꼼꼼히 읽어야 해요 (Read the contract carefully — paperwork and formal language).

What it means

V-아/어 가다 shows an action or a change that keeps moving on from now towards some point ahead: 한국 생활에 점점 익숙해져 가요 'I'm gradually getting used to life in Korea'. Form it like -아/어요: after ㅏ or ㅗ add 아 가다 (끝나 가다, 살아가다 — written as one word), after other vowels add 어 가다 (늘어 가다, 되어 가다 = 돼 가다), and 하다 becomes 해 가다. With 다 or 거의 it means 'almost': 계약이 거의 끝나 가요 'my lease is nearly over', 저녁이 다 되어 가요 'it's nearly evening', and on the phone 거의 다 와 가요 'I'm almost there'. It often goes with -아/어지다 (Lesson 3A-9) for a gradual change: 추워져 가요, 좋아져 가요. Compared with -고 있다 (Lesson 1B-2), which simply says something is in progress, -아/어 가다 adds a sense of moving towards an end or a future state. The tense goes on 가다: 다 끝나 갔어요, 앞으로도 배워 갈 거예요. It is the mirror image of -아/어 오다 (Lesson 3B-9), which runs from the past up to now: 1년 동안 배워 왔어요 — 앞으로도 배워 갈 거예요. Keep it apart from 가져가다, where 가다 really means going somewhere with something.
