N대로 — 'as N · according to N' — the way a plan, an order or someone's words say

'as N · according to N' — the way a plan, an order or someone's words say. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 1: 적성과 진로 (Aptitude and career paths).

What it means

대로 after a noun means 'as N' or 'according to N': 계획대로 'as planned', 순서대로 'in order', 선생님 말씀대로 'as the teacher said'. It stays the same with or without 받침 and is written together with the noun (계획대로, not 계획 대로); after ㄱ, ㄷ or ㅂ it sounds like [때로] — 계획대로 [계획때로], 약속대로 [약쏙때로]. The noun is usually something set or said before — a plan, an order, a promise, a schedule, a rule, someone's words (말씀 for a teacher, 말 for a friend) — and the verb at the end says what went or was done that way: 계획대로 됐어요 'it went as planned', 순서대로 쓰세요 'write it in order'. Two fixed ones are worth learning whole: 마음대로 'as you like' and 사실대로 'truthfully, as it really was'. 대로 itself never takes a tense; the verb at the end does.
