V-는 대로 · V-(으)ㄴ 대로 — 'the way someone does or did' — and -는 대로 'as soon as'

'the way someone does or did' — and -는 대로 'as soon as'. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 1: 적성과 진로 (Aptitude and career paths).

What it means

After a verb, 대로 needs a modifier ending, and the ending shows the time. -(으)ㄴ 대로 is for something already said, done or decided: 선생님이 말씀하신 대로 'as the teacher said', 배운 대로 'the way I learned' (after 받침, -은: 들은 대로, 읽은 대로). -는 대로 is for what happens now or usually: 제가 아는 대로 'as far as I know', 회사가 원하는 대로 'the way the company wants'. -는 대로 has a second meaning, 'as soon as': 결과가 나오는 대로 연락드리겠습니다 'I will contact you as soon as the results are out'. In this meaning only -는 대로 is used, and what follows is a promise, a plan or a request (-겠습니다, -(으)ㄹ게요, -(으)세요) — not a finished past event; for 'I left as soon as class ended', keep -자마자 (3A): 수업이 끝나자마자 갔어요. Write a space before 대로 here: 말씀하신 대로, 아는 대로.
