Passing on and checking what you heard review — I hear …, right? · and …? · I saw that … · they said … and … · … and so on, so …. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 12: 4A 정리 · 겪은 일 되짚기 (Level 4A round-up — looking back at what happened).
What it means
These five endings deal with what you heard and what you saw — the language of the news, holidays and catching up. -다면서(요)? (4A-4) checks something you heard earlier: 대전에 눈이 많이 온다면서요? — it is built on the reported-speech forms (adjectives -다, verbs -ㄴ/는다, nouns (이)라), and among friends it is -다면서?. Compare -다고요? (3A-8), which checks what someone has just said, and -다니요? (3B-8), which is surprise. -고(요)? (4A-4) adds one more question after a first one: 짐은 다 쌌어요? 따뜻한 옷도 챙겼고요?; with a noun alone, N은/는요? (마크 씨는요?). -더군(요) (4A-6) tells now what you saw or found out back then, a little formally: 가 보니 학생이 열두 명뿐이더군요; with -았/었- it means the thing was already over when you saw it (가 보니 표가 벌써 다 팔렸더군요). -다더니 (4A-6) sets what people said against what really happened — it came true (맛있다더니 정말 맛있더군요) or it didn't (쉬워진다더니 더 바빠졌어요), and proverbs often come in front of it: 시작이 반이라더니. -고 해서 (4A-6) gives one reason among several: 주말이고 해서 놀러 갔어요 · 날씨도 따뜻하고 해서. All five take -았/었- for something already done.
