A-(으)ㄴ가 싶다 · V-나 싶다 · -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 — I wonder if … · I half suspect … — voicing a doubt or worry to yourself

I wonder if … · I half suspect … — voicing a doubt or worry to yourself. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 11: 답안지에 쓰는 문장 (Sentences for the answer sheet — writing like a textbook).

What it means

V-나 싶다 lets you voice a doubt that is half a question to yourself: 개요를 너무 길게 썼나 싶어요 'I wonder if I made the outline too long — maybe I did'. It is softer and more personal than -는 것 같다, and less sure than -다 싶다 (Lesson 4B-7), so it is a modest way to admit a possible mistake: 제가 너무 늦게 말씀드렸나 싶어요. Verbs and 있다 · 없다 take -나 (쓰나, 있나; ㄹ drops: 살다 → 사나); adjectives take -(으)ㄴ가 (짧은가, 큰가, 작은가); nouns take N인가 (실수인가). The past is -았/었나 싶다 for any word (썼나, 짧았나). -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 looks ahead: either a worry that something might happen — 늦을까 싶어서 일찍 나왔어요 'I left early in case I'd be late' — or a plan you are half-considering: 내일은 도서관에서 공부할까 싶어요. Often 싶기도 하다 adds 'part of me thinks': 너무 짧은가 싶기도 해요. In an essay, use these in diaries and personal writing, not in the argument of a TOPIK 54 answer.
