A-(으)ㄴ 셈이다 · V-는 셈이다 — it comes to … · it's as good as … — summing up, rounding off, drawing a conclusion

It comes to … · it's as good as … — summing up, rounding off, drawing a conclusion. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 11: 답안지에 쓰는 문장 (Sentences for the answer sheet — writing like a textbook).

What it means

셈 means a sum or calculation, and -는 셈이다 says 'if you work it out, it comes to this': you look at some facts and round them off into a conclusion that is practically, if not exactly, true. 틀린 데가 두 군데뿐이니까 거의 다 맞은 셈이에요 'only two mistakes, so you got practically everything right'. Use V-는 셈이다 for something happening now or habitually (매일 쓰니까 일주일에 일곱 편을 쓰는 셈이에요), V-(으)ㄴ 셈이다 for something already done (다 쓴 셈이다, 두 배가 된 셈이다), A-(으)ㄴ 셈이다 for an adjective (맛을 생각하면 싼 셈이에요 'given the taste, it's actually cheap') and N인 셈이다 for a noun (반에서 1등인 셈이에요). The facts usually come first, linked with -(으)니까, -(으)므로 or -는데, and words like 거의 and 결국 make the rounding clear. Looking back, 셈이었다 places the whole judgement in the past. In TOPIK 53 graph answers it turns raw numbers into a meaningful statement: 300명에서 900명으로 늘었으므로 4년 만에 세 배가 된 셈이다.
