Concessions and conditions review — even if …, even though (I) …, as long as …, if/when … (then do), can't … even if I try. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 12: 4급 수료 · 한국에서 보낸 시간 (Level 4 complete — my time in Korea).
What it means
Level 4 gave you finer ways to say 'even if' and 'if'. -더라도 (4A-11) is a hypothetical concession — even if it happens, the second half holds: 떨어지더라도 연기는 계속할 거예요; it sounds a little more serious than -아/어도. -고도 (4B-2) is a real concession about something done: 떨어질 줄 알고도 지원했어요 'I applied even though I knew I'd fail'; -고도 남다 means 'more than enough'. -는 한 (4B-2) sets a lasting condition — 'as long as': 포기하지 않는 한 기회는 또 와요; with nouns N인 한. -거든 (4A-4) is 'if/when that happens', and what follows must be a request, an order, a suggestion or a promise: 결과가 나오거든 연락해 주세요 (not a plain statement). -(으)ㄹ래야 -(으)ㄹ 수(가) 없다 (4B-4) says you cannot do something however hard you try: 잊을래야 잊을 수가 없어요; in speech you also hear -(으)려야.
