A/V-(으)ㄹ 리(가) 없다 — there's no way … · … can't be — a strong 'that can't be true'

There's no way … · … can't be — a strong 'that can't be true'. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 5: 그런 일까지 있다니 (Even that happened? — reacting to news of accidents and incidents).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 리(가) 없다 says, strongly, that something cannot be so — not because you checked, but because of what you know: 할머니가 그런 전화에 속으실 리가 없어요 'there's no way Grandma would fall for a call like that'. 리 is an old noun meaning 'reason' or 'way', so the sentence literally says 'there is no way for it to happen'. After a stem with 받침 use -을 리가 없다 (속을 리가, 많을 리가); after a vowel or ㄹ use -ㄹ 리가 없다 (갈 리가, 알 리가 — the ㄹ of 알다 simply stays); with a noun use N일 리가 없다 (범인일 리가). For something that cannot have happened already, put -았/었- in front: 민수 씨가 벌써 도착했을 리가 없어요 'Minsu can't have arrived yet'. The question form -(으)ㄹ 리가 있어요? sounds like a question but means the same 'no way!': 그 사람이 경찰일 리가 있어요? And when someone tells you something unbelievable, two words are enough: 그럴 리가요! In speech 가 is often dropped (그럴 리 없어요). Compared with -(으)ㄹ 것 같지 않다 'I don't think so', -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 is much stronger, so use it when you are sure — and be careful when it is about something a person in front of you said, because it can sound as if you are calling them a liar.
