V-는 김에 · V-(으)ㄴ 김에 — while you're at it · since you're (already) there — adding one more thing to the same trip
While you're at it · since you're (already) there — adding one more thing to the same trip. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 6: 여행의 즐거움 (The joy of travel — while you're at it, and rather than…).
What it means
-는 김에 says that you are doing one thing anyway and will use the chance to do another: 부산에 가는 김에 지민 씨 작업실에도 들를 거예요 'I'm going to Busan anyway, so I'll drop in at Jimin's studio too'. The first action is the reason you go or the thing you were going to do; the second is the extra you add on. Add 는 김에 to any verb stem, with or without 받침 (가는 김에, 찾는 김에); a stem ending in ㄹ drops it (만들다 → 만드는 김에). When the first action has already happened — you have arrived, you are already there — use -(으)ㄴ 김에: 제주에 간 김에 올레길도 걸었어요 'since I was in Jeju, I walked an Olle trail too', 여기까지 온 김에 하루 더 있다가 가세요 'since you've come all this way, stay another day'. -았/었- is never added in front of 김에; the tense of the whole sentence goes at the very end. The fixed phrase 말이 나온 김에 'since it has come up' lets you bring up something related to what was just said. Two cousins: -는 길에 (Lesson 3B-6) means 'on the way', while you are moving, and 김에 cannot give a cause — for 'it rained, so I bought an umbrella', use -아/어서, not 김에. In requests, 김에 makes a favour sound small: 편의점에 가는 김에 물 좀 사다 주세요 — you're going anyway.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V-는 김에 | 동사 — 지금 하는 일 · 앞으로 할 일 (받침이 있어도 없어도 는 · ㄹ은 떨어져요) | 가다 + 는 김에 → 가는 김에 |
| V-(으)ㄴ 김에 | 동사 — 이미 한 일 · 이미 와 있는 곳 (받침 O 은 · 받침 X · ㄹ ㄴ) | 오다 + ㄴ 김에 → 온 김에 |
Key points
- V-는 김에 = I'm doing A anyway (now or soon), so I'll do B as well: 우체국에 가는 김에 편지도 부칠게요. A is the reason you go; B is the bonus. Verbs only, with or without 받침 (가는 김에 · 찾는 김에); ㄹ drops (만들다 → 만드는 김에).
- V-(으)ㄴ 김에 = A has already happened, so B too: 온 김에 · 간 김에 · 일어난 김에 · 말이 나온 김에. -았/었- never goes in front (갔는 김에 ✗) — the tense goes at the very end: 제주에 간 김에 올레길도 걸었어요.
Examples
