N(이)면 N(이)면 — be it A or be it B — good in every way, one thing after another

Be it A or be it B — good in every way, one thing after another. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 6: 여행의 즐거움 (The joy of travel — while you're at it, and rather than…).

What it means

N(이)면 N, N(이)면 N praises something by going through its good points one by one: 부산은 바다면 바다, 음식이면 음식, 다 좋아요 'Busan — whether it's the sea or the food — it's all great'. Literally it says 'if it's the sea, (then) the sea; if it's food, (then) food': whichever point you pick, it is excellent. Say the same noun twice, with 이면 after a 받침 (음식이면 음식) and 면 after a vowel (바다면 바다). Two or three pairs are usual, followed by a summing-up: 다 좋아요, 못하는 게 없어요 'there's nothing (he) can't do', 빠지는 게 없어요 'nothing is missing', 없는 게 없어요 'it has everything'. It works for places, things and people: 지민 씨는 그림이면 그림, 요리면 요리, 못하는 게 없어요. It is a phrase of praise, so don't use it to complain. The noun pairs never change; the tense goes only on the summing-up at the end: 다 좋았어요. Compare N(이)든 N(이)든 (Lesson 4A-10), which means 'either one is fine'.
