V-느니 (차라리) — rather than … · I'd sooner … — choosing the lesser of two evils

Rather than … · I'd sooner … — choosing the lesser of two evils. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 6: 여행의 즐거움 (The joy of travel — while you're at it, and rather than…).

What it means

V-느니 (차라리) compares two choices you don't like and picks the less bad one: 한 시간이나 기다리느니 차라리 다른 데 가겠어요 'rather than wait a whole hour, I'd sooner go somewhere else'. Add 느니 to the verb stem, with or without 받침 (기다리느니, 먹느니, 걷느니); a final ㄹ drops (만들다 → 만드느니). 차라리 'rather, sooner' usually follows, and the sentence ends with what you would do instead: -겠어요, -(으)ㄹ래요 or the very common -는 게 나아요 — 택시를 타느니 차라리 걸어가는 게 나아요. It sounds frank and a little emotional, so it belongs with friends, in complaints and in reviews; with someone above you, compare more gently: 기다리는 것보다는 다른 데 가는 게 어떨까요? This is a Level 5 point in the international standard — for now, learn to recognise it and to use the set phrase -느니 차라리 -는 게 나아요.
