V-(으)나 마나 — no point (doing it) · sure without even (looking) — giving up, or being certain

No point (doing it) · sure without even (looking) — giving up, or being certain. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 9: 오늘부터 운동해야지 (Starting today, I'll work out — resolutions, excuses and cheering).

What it means

-(으)나 마나 means 'whether you do it or not' — the result will be the same, so there is no point, or no need. Add -으나 마나 after a 받침 (먹으나 마나, and 듣다 → 들으나 마나) and -나 마나 after a vowel or ㄹ (보나 마나, 하나 마나, 만들다 → 만드나 마나). It has two tones. One is giving up: 이 우산은 너무 작아서 쓰나 마나예요 'this umbrella is so small it's no use', 잠을 안 자면 커피를 마시나 마나예요 'if you don't sleep, coffee won't help'. The other is certainty: with verbs of finding out — 보나 마나, 물어보나 마나, 들으나 마나 — it means you already know the answer: 보나 마나 마크 씨 팀이 이길 거예요 'Mark's team is sure to win'. The conclusion comes at the end, usually with -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or, for a guess about the past, -았/었을 거예요 (물어보나 마나 민수는 또 늦잠을 잤을 거예요); you can also simply close with -(이)에요: 해 보나 마나예요. -았/었- never goes before 나 마나. Because it sounds so sure, think twice before using it about someone's ability — 보나 마나 못 할 거예요 sounds dismissive.
