Review: comparing and reporting — examples, what always happens, how far it went, against, on top of, at the same time, some … while others, not even, figures and trends (Lessons 5A-5, 5A-6, 5A-7). What it means
Three kinds of tool. Life (5A-5): N(이)라든가 lists examples, -게 마련이다 says what always happens, -(으)ㄹ 지경이다 how far it went, N(이)란 N은/는 모두 every single one. Comparing (5A-6): -는 데 비해 sets two facts against each other, -는가 하면 shows variety, -는 데다가 adds a reason in the same direction, -는 동시에 joins two things at once. Figures (5A-7): -다는 응답이 N에 달하다 for a large figure, N에 그치다 for a small one, -는 경향을 보이다 for a pattern, and N조차 for 'not even'.

Key points
- Comparing (5A-6): -는 데 비해 (against) · -는가 하면 (some … while others) · -는 데다가 (one more reason, same way) · -는 동시에 (at the same time · two sides). Life (5A-5): N(이)라든가 · -게 마련이다 · -(으)ㄹ 지경이다 · N(이)란 N은/는 모두.
- Figures (5A-7): -다는 응답이 N에 달하다 (large) · N에 그치다 (small) · -는 경향을 보이다 (a pattern — not for a handful of people) · N조차 (not even).
Examples
- 예를 들 때는 N(이)라든가 — 꽃이라든가 반지라든가. 누구나 아는 일은 -게 마련이다 — 오래 같이 살면 서로 닮게 마련이에요.
- 비교: -는 데 비해는 두 가지가 다를 때 — 할아버지는 육 남매인 데 비해 유나는 남동생 하나뿐이에요. -는가 하면은 이런 사람도 있고 저런 사람도 있을 때.
- 더하기: -는 데다가는 같은 쪽의 이유를 하나 더, -는 동시에는 같은 때나 두 모습 — 과장인 동시에 김 대리님의 아내예요.
- 숫자: -다는 응답이 N에 달하다(많을 때) · N에 그치다(적을 때) · -는 경향을 보이다. N조차는 「이것도 없어요」 — 응답자 수조차 없어요.
