A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 척하다 — pretending — and people who pretend (Lesson 3B-8, now for describing personality)

Pretending — and people who pretend (Lesson 3B-8, now for describing personality). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 2: MBTI와 AI 성격 분석 (MBTI and AI personality tests — types, pretending, and what people say about you).

What it means

You learned -(으)ㄴ/는 척하다 in Lesson 3B-8: acting as if something were true when it isn't — 모르는 척했어요 'I pretended not to know'. Today it describes personality. 잘난 척 'showing off', 아는 척 'acting like a know-it-all' and 착한 척 'a good-person act' are criticisms, so use them carefully. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ 척, verbs -는 척, something already done -(으)ㄴ 척, and nouns 인 척; the tense goes on 하다: 상냥한 척했어요. 못 이기는 척하다 means going along 'because someone insisted', when you really wanted to; -는 척도 안 하다 means someone did not even pretend.
