V-게 생겼다 — it's come to the point where … — a situation heading for trouble
It's come to the point where … — a situation heading for trouble. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 2: MBTI와 AI 성격 분석 (MBTI and AI personality tests — types, pretending, and what people say about you).
What it means
V-게 생겼다 says that something unwelcome is about to happen and there is no way round it: 이러다가 늦게 생겼어요 'at this rate I'm going to be late'. Common chunks are 큰일 나게 생겼어요 'we're in big trouble', 혼나게 생겼어요 'I'm going to get told off' and 굶게 생겼어요 'I'm going to go hungry'. Add -게 생겼다 to a verb; because it describes the situation as it stands, it is almost always in the form 생겼다 / 생겼어요. It often follows 이러다가 or 이대로 가면. It is not the same as 착하게 생겼어요 'she looks kind', which is about a face.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V-게 생겼다 | 동사 (받침과 상관없음) | 늦다 → 늦게 생겼어요 |
Key points
- V-게 생겼다 = it's come to the point where … (usually bad): 늦게 생겼어요 · 큰일 나게 생겼어요 · 원서를 못 내게 생겼어요.
- Verbs only, almost always 생겼다 — the situation as it stands now. Often after 이러다가 · 이대로 가면 or a reason in -아/어서. 착하게 생겼다 is about a face, not a situation.
Examples
