A/V-다는 인상을 주다 — to come across as … — the impression you give (and get)

To come across as … — the impression you give (and get). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 2: MBTI와 AI 성격 분석 (MBTI and AI personality tests — types, pretending, and what people say about you).

What it means

A/V-다는 인상을 주다 says how someone comes across to others: 처음에는 차분하다는 인상을 줘요 'at first she comes across as calm'. Adjectives take -다는, verbs -ㄴ/는다는 and nouns (이)라는, followed by 인상을 주다: 믿음직스럽다는 · 잘 웃는다는 · 좋은 사람이라는 인상. When you are the one who gets the impression, use -다는 인상을 받다. It is more considered than -아/어 보이다 'looks', so it is common in interviews and in writing.
