V-는 둥 마는 둥 (하다) — barely · half-heartedly — doing something without really doing it

Barely · half-heartedly — doing something without really doing it. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 1: 프로필 사진 속의 나 (Me in my profile photo — describing looks, clothes and first impressions in the age of retouching).

What it means

V-는 둥 마는 둥 (하다) says something was done so little or so carelessly that you can hardly tell whether it was done at all: 잠을 자는 둥 마는 둥 했어요 'I hardly slept'. It goes with verbs only, and the tense goes on 하다 at the end: 먹는 둥 마는 둥 했어요. A final ㄹ drops before -는: 만들다 → 만드는 둥 마는 둥. Said about someone else, it sounds critical: 인사를 하는 둥 마는 둥 하고 가 버렸어요 'he barely said hello and was gone'.
