-지 (대조) — …, not … — yes to one thing, no to the other

…, not … — yes to one thing, no to the other. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 1: 프로필 사진 속의 나 (Me in my profile photo — describing looks, clothes and first impressions in the age of retouching).

What it means

-지 (contrast) says the first part is true and the second is not: 피곤한 거지 아픈 게 아니에요 'I'm tired, not ill'. It corrects what someone wrongly thought — very useful when a photo or a first impression gives the wrong idea. In speech the frame -(으)ㄴ/는 거지 … -(으)ㄴ/는 게 아니에요 is the most common; with a noun it is N(이)지: 친구지 애인이 아니에요 'he's a friend, not a boyfriend'. With 만 or 는 it compares two sides of a person or a thing: 키만 크지 몸은 약해요 'he's tall, but that's all — his body is weak'. It is not the long negative -지 않다: after the contrast -지 the sentence keeps going.
