V-ㄴ/는다는 것이 — I meant to …, but (by mistake) … — when what you did is not what you meant

I meant to …, but (by mistake) … — when what you did is not what you meant. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 3: 만나고 싶은 사람 (Someone I'd like to meet — an interview with a webtoon artist, a career in one sentence, AI-drawn pictures, and the first ten proverbs).

What it means

V-ㄴ/는다는 것이 says you meant to do one thing but did another by mistake: 설탕을 넣는다는 것이 소금을 넣었어요 'I meant to put in sugar but put in salt'. Put the plan first and what really happened after it, often with 그만 'by accident' or 잘못 'wrongly'. After a 받침 use -는다는 것이 (넣는다는 것이), after a vowel -ㄴ다는 것이 (보낸다는 것이), and a final ㄹ drops (만든다는 것이). In speech say -ㄴ/는다는 게. The verb before 다는 stays in the present form — 넣었다는 것이 ✗.
