V-기에 앞서(서) · N에 앞서 — prior to · before doing — the formal 'before' of documents, speeches and procedures

Prior to · before doing — the formal 'before' of documents, speeches and procedures. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 4: 모집 요강을 읽다 (Reading the admissions guide — applying to a university or graduate school: deadlines, documents and the visa).

What it means

V-기에 앞서(서) says what is done first, in the voice of documents and speeches: 원서를 쓰기에 앞서 요강을 읽었어요 'prior to writing the application, I read the guide'. It is the same after any stem (쓰기에 앞서 · 읽기에 앞서). With a noun for a step or an event use N에 앞서 — 면접에 앞서, 발표에 앞서 — and what follows is the thing done first. The meaning is that of -기 전에, but the place is a guide, a speech or a meeting; with friends say -기 전에.
