A/V-다는 응답이 N에 달하다 · N은/는 N에 그치다 — reporting survey figures — 'reached as many as …' for a big share, 'stopped at only …' for a small one (one frame, two ends)
Reporting survey figures — 'reached as many as …' for a big share, 'stopped at only …' for a small one (one frame, two ends). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 7: 설문과 데이터 (Surveys and data — reading a survey article and its chart, and what AI gets wrong about a survey).
What it means
In survey results, use N에 달하다 'to reach N' for a big figure and N에 그치다 'to stop at N' for a small one. 달했다 carries the feeling 'more than you'd think', 그쳤다 'less than you'd think' — and the same number can take either, depending on what you compare it with. What people answered goes before 응답 with -다는: 대화한다는 응답, 좋다는 응답, 「고맙다」는 응답. In conversation you would say 40%나 돼요 and 12%밖에 안 돼요; in articles and reports, 달했다 and 그쳤다.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
Key points
- …-다는 응답이 N에 달하다 = as many as N answered … (a big figure) · N은/는 N에 그치다 = only N (a small figure).
- What people said goes before 응답 with -다는 (Lesson 5A-2): 한다는 · 좋다는 · 했다는 · 「고맙다」는 · 「고마워」라는.
Examples
