Showed a tendency to … — what the figures say a group leans towards, in reports and articles. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 7: 설문과 데이터 (Surveys and data — reading a survey article and its chart, and what AI gets wrong about a survey).
What it means
V-는 경향을 보이다 says what a group of people generally did according to the results: 남성은 여성에 비해 마음을 말로 표현하지 않는 경향을 보였다 'men tended not to put their feelings into words, compared with women'. Verbs take -는 경향, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 경향: 고르는 경향, 만족도가 낮은 경향. It often goes with N에 비해 or -(으)ㄹ수록, and results are usually reported with 보였다. For one person's habit, use -(으)ㄴ/는 편이다: 저는 말을 짧게 하는 편이에요 — and for a group of only a dozen people, do not write 경향 at all.

Key points
- V-는 경향을 보이다 = showed a tendency to … — a group, shown by figures, usually in the past: 표현하지 않는 경향을 보였다. Adjectives: -(으)ㄴ 경향 (낮은 경향).
- Often with N에 비해 (4A-2) or -(으)ㄹ수록 (3B-5). Not for one person's habit — that is -(으)ㄴ/는 편이다 (2B-3) — and not for a group of a dozen people.
Examples
- 조사 결과에서 어떤 사람들이 대체로 그렇게 할 때 써요: 남성은 여성에 비해 마음을 말로 표현하지 않는 경향을 보였다.
- 동사에는 「-는 경향」, 형용사에는 「-(으)ㄴ 경향」을 써요: 고르는 경향 · 만족도가 낮은 경향.
- 「N에 비해」, 「-(으)ㄹ수록」과 같이 많이 쓰고, 결과를 말할 때는 보통 「보였다」라고 해요.
- 한 사람의 버릇에는 「-(으)ㄴ/는 편이다」를 써요: 저는 말을 짧게 하는 편이에요. 사람이 열 명 정도밖에 안 되는 무리에는 「경향」이라고 쓰지 않아요.
