N은/는 물론이거니와 — not to mention … · … of course, and even … — the first goes without saying, the second is the surprise
Not to mention … · … of course, and even … — the first goes without saying, the second is the surprise. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 5: 내 돈 지키기 (Protecting my money — a pay slip, the January tax settlement, scam calls and texts, and a bank counter).
What it means
N은/는 물론이거니와 says that the first thing is obvious and that the second is true as well — and stronger: 이름은 물론이거니와 비자 종류까지 알고 있었어요. Add 은/는 물론이거니와 to the first noun; the second noun usually takes 도 or 까지. Put the more expected thing first and the more surprising thing second: 외국인은 물론이거니와 한국 사람도. It is written and formal; with friends 「N은/는 물론이고」 sounds more natural.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N은 물론이거니와 | 명사 (받침 ○) | 이름 → 이름은 물론이거니와 비자 종류까지 |
| N는 물론이거니와 | 명사 (받침 ×) | 목소리 → 목소리는 물론이거니와 말투도 |
Key points
- N은/는 물론이거니와 … N도/까지 = not to mention …, even …: 이름은 물론이거니와 비자 종류까지.
- Expected thing first, surprise second. Written and emphatic — in speech N은/는 물론이고.
Examples
