A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 데다(가) — on top of … — adding a second point that pulls the same way (a first look in Lesson 4B-11, now in full)

On top of … — adding a second point that pulls the same way (a first look in Lesson 4B-11, now in full). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 6: 변화하는 가족 (The changing family — one-person households, staying unmarried, the birth rate: compared and contrasted).

What it means

A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 데다(가) adds one more fact of the same kind: 원서를 써야 하는 데다가 수업도 있어요 'I have to write my application, and on top of that I have classes'. Both facts go the same way — good and good, or bad and bad — and the second half usually takes 도 or 까지. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ, verbs -는, nouns 인; a finished action takes -(으)ㄴ: 늦게 잔 데다가 'I went to bed late, and on top of that …'. You saw it once in Lesson 4B-11. In writing, 가 is often dropped: -는 데다.
