At the same time · both … and … — two things at once. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 6: 변화하는 가족 (The changing family — one-person households, staying unmarried, the birth rate: compared and contrasted).

What it means

V-는 동시에 says two things happen at the same moment: 문이 열리는 동시에 사람들이 들어왔어요 'the moment the door opened, people came in'. It also says one person or thing has two sides at once: 박 과장님은 과장인 동시에 아내예요 'Ms Park is a manager and also a wife'. Verbs take -는 동시에, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 동시에, nouns 인 동시에; there is no past tense before 동시에. It sounds a little more formal than -(으)면서 and is common in writing and the news: 1인 가구가 늘어나는 동시에 … 'as one-person households increase, at the same time …'.
