A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 데(에) 비해 — compared with … · for … — one fact set against another, or against what you would expect

Compared with … · for … — one fact set against another, or against what you would expect. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 6: 변화하는 가족 (The changing family — one-person households, staying unmarried, the birth rate: compared and contrasted).

What it means

A-(으)ㄴ/V-는 데(에) 비해 compares two facts: 할아버지는 육 남매인 데 비해 유나는 남동생 하나뿐이에요 'Grandfather was one of six, whereas Yuna has just one younger brother'. It is also used when the second fact is better or worse than the first would make you expect: 값이 싼 데 비해 음식이 맛있어요 'the food is good for the price'. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ, verbs -는, nouns 인; a finished action takes -(으)ㄴ: 열심히 공부한 데 비해 'though I studied hard'. N에 비해 (Lesson 4A-2) compares only nouns; -는 데 비해 compares whole sentences.
